A methology for the stocks assessments of cultivated oysters among along the French Atlantic coasts ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Baud, Jean-pierre; Bodoy, Alain; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Dreno, Jean-paul; Heral, Maurice; Maurer, Daniele; Prou, Jean.
An assessment of the reared stocks of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas ) has been recently conducted on the major French areas of molluscs culture. The methodology proposed included both estimates of densities obtained by subsampling in the field, and aerial photographs which covered the cultivated, intertidal area. The size and the number of samples were designed to reach a precision of 10% on the final assessment in each area. The field work consisted in weighing and counting the oyster in unit areas of 0.5 m2 for the bottom culture or in trays or bags, for the off bottom technique. These results give a better knowledge of the technique evolution and of the general structures in the cultivated areas.

A weighted negative binomial Lindley distribution with applications to dispersed data Anais da ABC (AABC)
BAKOUCH,HASSAN S.
Abstract A new discrete distribution is introduced. The distribution involves the negative binomial and size biased negative binomial distributions as sub-models among others and it is a weighted version of the two parameter discrete Lindley distribution. The distribution has various interesting properties, such as bathtub shape hazard function along with increasing/decreasing hazard rate, positive skewness, symmetric behavior, and over- and under-dispersion. Moreover, it is self decomposable and infinitely divisible, which makes the proposed distribution well suited for count data modeling. Other properties are investigated, including probability generating function, ordinary moments, factorial moments, negative moments and characterization. Estimation of...

Agro-well and pump diffusion in the dry zone of Sri Lanka: Past trends, present status and future prospects AgEcon
Kikuchi, Masao; Weligamage, Parakrama; Barker, Randolph; Samad, Madar; Kono, Hiroichi; Somaratne, H.M..
The use of shallow wells, equipped with small pumps, to lift groundwater has spread rapidly in many agricultural regions of tropical monsoonal Asia. In Sri Lanka, the rapid and pervasive invasion of agro-wells and pumps drew the attention of policymakers and researchers, but many questions were left unanswered due to lack of research in the area. This study aims to fill this gap in knowledge, based on observations and data obtained in field surveys conducted in major and minor irrigation schemes in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. This report gives the key findings of this study into the pattern, extent and causes of the spread and use of agro-wells and pumps in traditional villages and irrigated settlement schemes. It investigates farmer investments in...

Amélioration de l'évaluation des stocks de mollusques cultivés en Charente- Maritime ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice; Prou, Jean.
The expansion of shellfish culture businesses (oysters, mussels, clams...) gives way to a competition for the use of limited food resources, especially in the Marennes-Oléron basin where water circulation is slow. Increasing the amount of cultivated molluscs leads, from a biological point of view, to:- a drop in growth performances- a rise in chronic mortalities, higher and higher, due to a weakness in the physiological state with a lack of stocks which would have compensated the habitat seasonal shortages (end of winter, etc...)- a greater weakness to diseases, linked to a deficient physiological state and a density rise which increases the proximity rate and thus, parasite propagation speed. For these primary reasons, and for the future of oyster culture,...

Best distribution and plotting positions of daily maximum flood estimation at Ona River in Ogun-Oshun river basin, Nigeria CIGR Journal
Temitayo Abayomi EWEMOJE; Department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, University of Ibadan; O. S. Ewemooje; Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan.
The paper discusses how Normal, Lognormal, and log-Pearson type 3 distributions were investigated as distributions for modelling at-site annual maximum flood flows using the Hazen, Weibull, and California plotting positions at Ogun-Oshun river basin in Nigeria.  All the probability distributions when matched with Weibull plotting position gave similar values near the center of the distribution but varied considerably in the tails.  The Weibull plotting position when matched with Normal, Log-normal and Log Pearson Type III probability distributions gave the highest coefficient of determinations of 0.967, 0.987, and 0.986 respectively.  Hazen plotting position gave minimal errors with the RMSE of 6.988, 6.390, and 6.011 for Normal, Log-normal, and...

Cartographie et évaluation des principaux mollusques filtreurs du Golfe Normano-Breton ArchiMer
Noel, Philippe; Blanchard, Michel; Berthou, Patrick.
During 1993 and 1994, quantitative sampling were realized in Norman Gulf (Western Channel) to estimate molluscs suspension-feeders. Four bivalves are regularly sampled : Spisula ovalis, Tapes rhomboides, Glycymeris glycymeris and Venus verrucosa. For each species, individual age and weight were noticed. The spreading gastropod Crepidula fornicata was also sampled. The resultant biomass and distribution are proposed. These results will contribute to the evaluation of trophic exchanges in boundary layer and to the proposed modeling, in the program PNOC (National Program for Coastal Oceanography). Difficulties in sampling for estimation of phytoplankton biomass in estuarine conditions : variabilities and precisions at different temporal scales in the case of the bay Marennes Oleron ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Goulletquer, Philippe; Razet, Daniel; Prou, Jean; Ravail, Brigitte; Maestrini, Serge.
Different sampling strategies have been tested for estimation of phytoplanktonic biomasses in a bay submitted to estuarine conditions and high velocity of currents. Daily variations showed that for a precision of 5% of the daily mean, it is necessary to sample with a 1 hour and a half time scale. Systematic sampling appears to be more preceise than the random sampling. A sampling during 35 days at low tide and at high tide, during the phytoplanktonic bloom, showed the large variability between the days. A precision of 30% of the mean biomass of the month is obtained with a 8 days time scale. Comparison between tidal cycle sampling (10% of precision) with a punctual sample in the middle of the day did not show large differences. As the main variability is...

Estimated live weight of growing Pêga breed donkeys Ciência Rural
Moreira,Camilla Garcia; Balieiro,Júlio César de Carvalho; Menezes,Madalena Lima; Ribeiro,Gabriela; Nascimento,Olivia Carmen de Araújo; Brandi,Roberta Ariboni.
ABSTRACT: The equations available in the literature to estimate the body weight (BW) of Pêga breed donkeys were evaluated using 25 animals aged 0-6 months and it was proposed an equation for BW prediction. For the measurement of the thoracic perimeter (TP) and for weighing the animals using the weighing tape, the animals were positioned in a forced station on a steep slope. An electronic scale was used for the determination of the BW. Accuracy of linear and nonlinear equations described in the literature was tested for BW prediction based on the animals’ TP, followed by the comparison of these equations with the equation developed in the present study for BW prediction of Pêga breed donkeys. A difference was noted (P<0.001) between the weights obtained...

Estimation de la biomasse d'huîtres non cultivées dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Pouvreau, Stephane; Renaud, Vivian.
In the Marennes-Oléron oyster culture basin, the cultivated oyster stock shows an unbalanced age distribution: 25 000 to 30 000 tonnes are commercialized each year for a total cultivated biomass of 95 000 tonnes (1993). The biological overexploitation of the basin requires a reduction of the stock in order to get back to productivity rates that are compatible with the restrictions of the oyster market. This study gives an estimated natural deposit biomass of around 3 000 tonnes. An estimate of the abandoned and wild oyster biomass shows that 20 000 tonnes of these animals can be considered as competitors to cultivated oysters. [...].

Estimation des stocks de palourdes Ruditapes decussatus, Ruditapes philippinarum sur l'estran oléronais du bassin de Marennes-Oléron. Juin 2009 ArchiMer
Bordeyne, François; Robert, Stephane; Le Moine, Olivier; Leaute, Jean-pierre.
On French coast, Manila clam is a bivalve subject of a large activity recreational and professional hand harvest. Two species are represented in France, European Manila clam Ruditapes decussatus (native) and Japanese Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (introduced). Predominance of this last species (more than 90 % of number and biomass), earn them the status of invasive species. Contrary to Arcachon bay, Pont l’Abbé River or Morbihan bay, an estimation campaign of Manila clams stock on Marennes-Oléron bay had never been carried out. The objective of this study: estimate, in number and biomass, the Manila clams stock of two areas. The first affect recreational hand harvest, on Saint-Trojan shore (0.8 km²) whereas the second scopes professional hand...

Gestion des bassins conchylicoles ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Prou, Jean; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The excess of farmed mollusc biomass in some French shellfish-farming basins (Marennes-Oléron basin, Isle of Ré, Isle of Bourgneuf) has been clearly highlighted. This manifests itself as a decrease of growth consistency of the molluscs and an increase in chronic mortality rates not linked to pathogenic agents. To this excess of farmed biomass are added the biomass of oysters or "wild" mussels or biomass linked to abandoned concessions.

Grain Sorghum International Trade: U.S.-Mexico Simulation and Estimation Model AgEcon
Liu, Bing; Malaga, Jaime E..
An econometric international supply/demand/trade simulation and forecast sorghum model in a partial equilibrium framework is built in this research paper to quantify the effects of key exogenous variables on the U.S.-Mexico sorghum trade. A forecast baseline is also established by using the validated model and values of exogenous variables provided by FAPRI to project the level of endogenous variables over the period of 2009 to 2017. Impacts of plausible alternative scenarios for key exogenous variables are simulated from 2009 to 2017.

LEAST SQUARES AND ENTROPY AS PENALTY FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Preckel, Paul V..
Mathematical measures of entropy as defined by Shannon (1948) and Kullback and Leibler (1951) are currently in vogue in the field of econometrics, primarily due to the comprehensive work by Golan, Judge, and Miller (1996). In this paper, an alternative interpretation of the entropy measure as a penalty function over deviations is presented. Using this interpretation, a number of parallels are drawn with least squares estimators, and it is demonstrated that, with a minor modification of the traditional least squares estimator, both approaches may be applied to the general linear model. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed, and a philosophical approach to the selection of estimation technique is suggested.

Natural convection drying kinetics of ‘Prata’ and ‘D’água’ banana cultivars (Musa ssp) by nonlinear regression models Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Furtado,Thais Destefani Ribeiro; Muniz,Joel Augusto; Silva,Edilson Marcelino; Frühauf,Ariana Campos; Fernandes,Tales Jesus.
Abstract Banana is among fruits most planted in tropical countries and belongs to the fruit group most consumed in the world; however, banana needs proper conservation techniques. The aim of this study was to describe the drying kinetics of ‘Prata’ and ‘D’água’ banana cultivars at temperatures of 40 and 70°C, comparing the Henderson, STPE, Lewis, Page and Fick regression models, estimating the Absolute Drying Rate (ADR). Parameters were estimated with R and SAS Studio softwares, using for comparison and selection models of the R²aj, RSD and corrected Akaike Information Criteria. The Page and Fick models did not adjust, and the others presented good adjustment to data. The Henderson model was the most suitable to describe data of ‘Prata’ banana at both...

O ESQUEMA DE TARIFAS EM BLOCO PRATICADO PELAS COMPANHIAS DE ÁGUA: UM ESTUDO DOS CONSUMIDORES RESIDENCIAIS DE BAIXA RENDA AgEcon
Pizaia, Marcia Goncalves; Alves, Rozane.

Physical structures, advection and mixing in the region of Goban spur ArchiMer
Huthnance, John M.; Coelho, Henrique; Griffiths, Colin R.; Knight, Philip J.; Rees, Andrew P.; Sinha, Bablu; Vangriesheim, Annick; White, Martin; Chatwin, Paul G..
The physical context for ocean margin exchange at Goban Spur is described. Observations adjacent to, prior to and during the Ocean Margin EXchange (OMEX) project of 1993-1996 are used. They include currents measured on moorings, drogued-buoy tracks; temperature and other data from CTD profiles, especially as indicators of vertical mixing; evidence from models, particularly for turbulence causing vertical mixing. These data are combined in estimates of (seasonally dependent) mean flow, tidal currents, other current variability, exchange and mixing over the main cross-slope section studied in OMEX and in nearby and contrasted locations (aided by the use of earlier and adjacent measurements). Causative physical processes are discussed: potentially northward...
